This market of Bang Pa-in District has the weird name because, in the past, vendors would lay their merchandises on the ground or in their boats. People who wanted to buy such merchandises had to bow their heads down in order to take closer look at the merchandises. It is said that, during Ayutthaya Era, people bowed very nicely.

This market has been opened since A.D. 2006. It is a private market with the objective to allow the locals to have some space to open their shops. The market has been successful and has grown bigger until it becomes an interesting market of Ayutthaya. This market is opened from Thursdays to Sundays. On Thursdays and Fridays, customers are the locals or people working in nearby factories. During the weekends, customers who are tourists from other places will come.

Even though this market is not a big one, it has its own charm. All vendors wear Thai costumes in magenta or purple colours like the colours of the skin of mangosteens and name tags. The highlight of this market is the food zone where we can buy the foods we want and enjoy them at the provided eating space. After finishing the foods, we can dispose the containers and packages of foods in provided trash bins. There are many delicious foods. The deeper we go in the market the more prestigious shops we will find.

Other highlighted products are local products from local wisdoms, crafts and art works. Anyone that is tired of walking can enjoy body massages, leg massages and shoulder massages in amicable prices.

At ten o’clock in the morning of each opening day, there will be the Thai drum dance performance to be dedicated to Pho Pu Saeng Som (the male ancestral spirit named Saeng Som). On the first Sunday of each month, there will be a coin alms giving, which is an activity that all visitors can participate. This is how Thai traditions can be conserved and sustained.

Most importantly, at Kong Khong Market, all facilities, such as parking lot and toilet, are free, and no admission fee is charged. You just pay for the products you purchase. Thus, this market is a must.

Opening Hours: Thursdays to Sundays and Holidays from 09:00 to 16:00

Location: Ban Saeng Som, on No. 3477 Highway (Bang Pa-in – Ayutthaya), 10 kilometers from Bang Pa-in Palace and 13 kilometers from Ayutthaya City
