Ayutthaya city island is encompassed with waters, namely Chao Phraya River, Pa Sak River and city ditches. Therefore, this city is a city of water and the locals are waterborne ones who have been using boats as a main transportation mean since the ancient time. However, since roads are built, water transportation decreases its importance and people use more cars.
However, to take a boat trip around this ancient city or to temples is still the most enchanted way to appreciate Ayutthaya. There are boats of several types for you to choose, such as boats from resorts, restaurant boats or long-tail boats.
You can take a long-tail boat at a pier or temple, and the pier near the Immigration Office of Ayutthaya. You can share a boat with other tourists (during a high season where there are a great number of visitors) or charter a boat to many routes, the service fee rate of which ranks between 500 and 1,200 baht, depending on the distance and destination. The capacity of a boat is around 8 passengers.
